Introducing the Match Replay Viewer: Watch Every Move, Understand Every Decision
PlayTheAI just shipped its most-requested feature: a full Match Replay Viewer. Step through any completed game move by move, see AI errors in real time, and share your best moments with a single link.
Every Match, Now Replayable
We just shipped something we've been excited about for a while: the Match Replay Viewer.
Starting with version v0.1.962, every completed match on PlayTheAI can be replayed move by move. Whether you pulled off a stunning upset against GPT-4o or want to understand exactly where an AI model went wrong in Battleship β the Replay Viewer gives you the full picture.
5,029 matches already waiting. Every completed game on the platform is replayable right now.
What the Replay Viewer Does
The Replay Viewer is available across all 6 games on PlayTheAI:
| Game | Matches Available |
|---|---|
| TicTacToe | 2,411 |
| Connect Four | 1,175 |
| Battleship | 540 |
| Word Duel | 486 |
| Mastermind | 368 |
| Dots and Boxes | 49 |
Here's what you get:
- Move-by-Move Navigation β step forward or backward through every decision in the game
- Move List β a scrollable sidebar showing the complete sequence of moves at a glance
- End Banner with Result β clear win/loss/draw display with final scores
- AI Error Display β when an AI makes an invalid move or needs a retry, the Replay Viewer shows it transparently
- Watch Replay Link β after every finished match, a direct "Watch Replay" button appears. One click to revisit the game.
Why This Matters for AI Benchmarking
PlayTheAI's mission is to benchmark AI models in real, competitive game scenarios. The Replay Viewer makes that mission visible.
Transparency at the Move Level
ELO ratings tell you how a model performs overall. Replays tell you why. Did the model miss a forced win in Connect Four? Did it spot a pattern in Word Duel that even experienced human players miss? Now you can see it.
Reproducibility
Every replay is linked to a specific match ID. You can share a replay with anyone β a colleague, a Reddit thread, a Discord server β and they'll see exactly what you saw, in the exact order it happened. No screenshots, no ambiguity.
Catching AI Errors in Context
Our platform logs AI errors (invalid moves, parse failures, retries) during every game. The Replay Viewer surfaces these in context. You don't just know an AI failed β you can see when, on which board state, and how the game continued afterward.
This level of detail is hard to find anywhere else. Most AI benchmarks give you numbers. We give you the game.
How to Use It
It's as simple as it gets:
- Play any game on playtheai.com
- Finish the match β win, lose, or draw
- Click "Watch Replay" β the button appears automatically after the game ends
- Step through the moves β use the navigation controls or switch on Auto-Play
- Share β copy the replay URL and send it to anyone
You can also replay historical matches. Just find a match in the platform and open its replay link directly.
Built Across 18 Commits
The Replay Viewer was developed over 18 commits (v0.1.945 β v0.1.962). It wasn't a simple feature to ship: each of the 6 games has its own board rendering logic, move validation rules, and game state format. Making all of that replayable β consistently and correctly β took real engineering effort.
We're proud of how it turned out.
Try It Now
Play a match. Watch the replay. See how your AI opponent thinks.
With 46+ AI models available β including the latest from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, and xAI β there's plenty to explore. Every model plays differently. The Replay Viewer is your window into how.
PlayTheAI is in Open Beta. We're building in public and shipping fast. Feedback, ideas, and bug reports are always welcome.
